Scheuchzer is looking forward to receiving the “new” 08-16/90 tamping machine

At the beginning of March, representatives from Scheuchzer visited Leverkusen-Opladen to get an update on the work carried out on the 08-16/90 tamping machine. They were happy with the progress on the machine and are looking forward to being able to operate it again in the autumn.

We already reported on this comprehensive project in our last issue of update. The 08-16/90 tamping machine had suffered severe damage in a collision in 2018 and was originally supposed to be scrapped. However, after talking to Deutsche Plasser, the Swiss company decided in favour of repair including a retrofit.

Experts from Linz have supported the team in Leverkusen-Opladen

The project gained momentum in April 2019 when the catalogue of requirements was sent to Plasser & Theurer in Linz and the designers there could get down to work. 85 % of the machine had to be redesigned! Now the key tasks have been completed. The 08-16/90 has now, amongst other things, a new engine, new tamping units, an additional lifting and alignment unit, a new main frame and a modified hydraulics system, which can, in line with customer requirements, operate all the units on the trailer.

For the work on the hydraulics system in particular, experts from Linz travelled to Leverkusen to support our team there. This demonstrated how important a direct line to Linz is when implementing a project of this size. The manufacturer expertise from the design office in Linz is indispensable for such complex tasks. A key consideration throughout was to retain the approval for the machine. Otherwise, the deadline for putting the machine back into operation would have been delayed considerably.

Cabin almost completely rebuilt

Despite the usual complications caused by the pandemic, we are very happy with the progress of the project. At the end of May, the main frame was ready for painting. After that, work on the cabins commenced; they will be almost entirely re-mounted and re-fitted. In the last phase of the project, work on the trailer will be finalised. Not an easy task either, since the trailer was built by Scheuchzer themselves.

Delivery planned for this autumn

We are planning to complete the project in October. As the Scheuchzer representatives pointed out during their visit in March, they are happy with the progress of the project and are looking forward to putting the “new” 08-16/90, year of manufacture 1993, back into operation.
